Salome Magazine

Salome is a 100-page print magazine about analog photography that I published, featuring more than forty artists.

I ran the whole thing. Contributor outreach, editorial direction, sequencing, layout, print production, and the unglamorous logistics of getting a physical object into people’s hands. Forty contributors means forty separate conversations about what a body of work is trying to say, and then one decision about how those bodies of work sit next to each other on a page.

Alongside the magazine I kept my own freelance photography going. I shot editorial 35mm portraiture for gallery exhibitions and nonprofit fundraisers, made exclusive product lines for small businesses, and consulted for local film labs. My work has appeared in LensCulture and Pamplemousse Magazine, and was exhibited at Aeronaut Brewing Company.

Editing a magazine is closer to product work than it sounds. You are deciding what a stranger encounters first, what they are ready for by page thirty, and what you are asking them to carry through to the end. If you’re making a publication, a shoot, or anything that has to hold up in print, I’d like to hear about it.
