January 2020 - April 2021
BIDMC
I worked as a patient care technician at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center through the first year of COVID.
BLS-certified critical care support in the cardiovascular ICU and the cardiac surgical units. Patient monitoring, vital signs, and interdisciplinary handoffs as part of a care team that was, that year, running on very little.
There are no deliverables from this one. What I took from it is a permanent sense of what a bad interface costs when the person using it has not slept, is wearing three layers of protective equipment, and cannot afford to misread a number. Every safety-critical design decision I have made since has that room somewhere behind it. If you’re designing for rooms like that, I’d like to hear what you’re working on.
